Supporting Operatives through Drug and Alcohol Misuse

Encouraging healthy living throughout the workforce is important.

Providing information and help on preventing the use of alcohol and drugs, can make operatives feel supported and cared for.

Alcohol and drug use should also be considered and discouraged. Especially as this can have a negative impact on the health and wellbeing of the workforce and even present a potential safety issue.

Below is an example of how sites have tried to support their workforce regarding alcohol and drug abuse:

  • Regular random drug and alcohol tests were carried out on site;
  • During these random tests one operative failed the test and was removed from the site;
  • The site supported the operative by enrolling them on a rehabilitation program to enable them to quit the habit;
  • There was an opportunity for the individual to be re-employed by the site if he completed the rehabilitation program.
