Tackling Climate Change with Science Based Targets

Multiplex has made a significant commitment to sustainability by taking the crucial step towards a low-carbon economy and signing up to the Science Based Target initiative. The business is only the second UK construction company to have targets approved by the SBTi and officially aligned with global demands to tackle climate change.

Multiplex has committed to reduce direct carbon emissions 30% by 2030. The business is accelerating progress against this target by switching all sites to renewable electricity tariffs. Multiplex has already transitioned several sites including 80 Charlotte St, saving £900,000 through procurement efficiencies and saving over 3,500 tonnes of carbon.

We are implementing a comprehensive behavioural change program engaging with our internal and external stakeholders. In a business-as-usual scenario, Multiplex will save 12,500 tonnes of carbon over the next five years, which is equivalent to the carbon footprint of 1,543 UK households.

Multiplex’s SBTs will also impact an extensive supply chain as the company has committed that 95% suppliers will set science-based targets.

Multiplex spent £800m with the supply chain, therefore the company’s actions in enabling suppliers to set meaningful carbon targets will influence a significant proportion of the construction market in tackling climate change.

The 80 Charlotte Street team are leading the way in the delivery of integrated environmental sustainability strategies in construction, in particular the transition to a low energy and carbon economy through SBTs. This initiative flows right the way through from the client, Derwent, through to Multiplex and into the supply chain.
