What3Words: Emergency Response

What3words provides a precise and incredibly simple way to talk about an exact location. It takes complex GPS coordinates and converts them into unique 3 word addresses.

The Spine project is in the middle of a multi project development site which is extensive, surrounded by arterial roads and several access and egress gates. In the event of an emergency, this could collectively contribute to confusion and delay, especially to drivers of emergency vehicles without familiarity of the development. The Project Manager identified the advantages of using ‘what3words’, to effectively communicate a precise location.

The geocoding system supersedes all forms of addressing for the communication of locations with a resolution of three metres, and encodes geographic coordinates into a unique set of three dictionary words. The system relies on a fixed algorithm rather than a large database of every location on earth, and most effectively works on devices with limited storage without need of an internet connection.

Its effectiveness was proven when an ambulance crew was required to attend to a casualty trapped on a high floor of the building.
