Falls from height continue to be one of the biggest killers in construction. To minimise the risk of working at height in risers, the One Crown Place team have gone beyond internal and external recommendations in riser safety, challenging standard practice by designing out this key risk on the project by implementing the RiserSafe system.
RiserSafe, developed by a company called Ambar Kelly, is a bespoke made to measure steel riser safety and management system. The units are cast into the structural floor slab forming and protecting the hole in a single action; eliminating risk associated with working at height. Services are passed through smaller, correctly sized cut outs within the durbar plate during installation, preventing large holes from being opened up.
The RiserSafe units can also be used as fire breaks where required for the project fire strategy; providing the permanent form work for fire stopping, reducing the risk of installing fire stopping at height and wasting shuttering.
Overall, the innovation has been a change of philosophy, attitude and approach; from managing a hole on site to designing out and removing risk during the design phase.
Further benefits include:
- OCP has estimated to have saved approximately 6500hrs working at height compared with using an equivalent GRP or timber solution.
- No cutting is required on site; which reduces the chance of unplanned works at height and allows factory conditions to be employed for staff wellbeing.
- Reduced dust from cutting compared with an alternative GRP or timber riser protection system.
