At CR Civil Engineering, we know how important it is to minimise workers exposure to Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVs) and how difficult it can be to calculate exposure if multiple tools are used in one shift. To help, we have developed a smartphone app which Site Managers and Foremen can use to make the calculation as simple as possible. This app was developed by our IT Manager and it is bespoke to us, embedded in the app is a list of tools likely to cause vibration related health issues that are owned by CR Civil Engineering.

The first step in using the HAVS calculator app is choosing the tool that you will be utilising for the work activity from the drop down menu. Once you have selected the tool, the vibration magnitude will be calculated and you will then input in the exposure time box how long you think you will be using the equipment for e.g. 30 minutes.

When you have filled out your information, press the calculate button and if the screen appears RED, you can’t use the tools for the time stated. If the screen appears GREY, you can use the tools for the time stated.

After testing the app at our operational yard for the past few months, we are pleased with its performance. It has now been rolled out on the M1 Junction 23 – Improvement Scheme.
