The project team have been in discussions with a local SME, Audio Signs where the Director introduced them to the concept of ‘Talking signs’. The project team immediately saw the benefit and wanted to introduce this into the site to improve efficiencies where possible.
Audio signs are interactive ‘talking’ signs which use visual information and sound to deliver key messages to people on the project. They have developed two bespoke units to use on one of their projects in an attempt to raise hazard awareness and improve the work environment externally and internally within the project in respect to the way they convey their key messages. Audio Signs shared research with local universities that showed that audible stimulus increases the reaction in brain receptors by 1207% compared to a standard visual sign.
The signs created are a Vulnerable Road Users sign and a Willmott Dixon All Safe sign. The vulnerable road users signs has been developed to be installed at the front of site at the vehicle access point in an area to warn and raise awareness to vulnerable road users when walking alongside the footpath close to the entrance. The alert currently activates as: ‘ALERT TONE – Warning – You are approaching a construction site entrance – be aware of moving vehicles.’
The Willmott Dixon All Safe sign has been developed to be installed at the entrance of the turnstile alerting and reminding operatives to some of the standards required and also of any changes to the site. These are on a cycle and change as each person walks by.
