Ultilow Low Temperature Asphalt

The scheme required a 40mm surface course to be placed during night-time closures of the busy A630 College Road Roundabout in Rotherham. Tarmac proposed to use Ultilow, Low Temperature Asphalt to permit as early opening as possible of the roundabout junction to minimise disruption to road users.

Ultilow asphalts embrace proven technology to ensure that the material supplied performs as well as conventional hot asphalts, but with the added benefits of improved workability and allowing earlier opening times to traffic and delivers carbon footprint savings of up to 25% compared to hot equivalents.

The use of the product had the following benefits:

• Better Productivity – Where time restrictions are relevant, larger sections can be laid and still opened to traffic as required, thereby reducing the overall contract programme duration.
• Reduced Seasonality – Ultilow is less seasonal and can be supplied and laid all year round.
• Ultimate Sustainability – Ultilow asphalts can deliver carbon footprint savings of up to 25% compared to hot equivalents ‘warm is the norm’.
• Improved Safety – Lower temperatures mean less risk of burns and reduced fumes and steam on site which can impact on visibility at times.
