Young Person Safety Leadership Team

The senior leadership on the project had a Safety Senior Leadership Team (SLT) that looked at health and safety issues on site, but an opening was found on how the site could engage young people in health and safety on a practical level. This led to the creation of the Young Person SLT (YP SLT).

The YP SLT helps give a powerful voice to anyone working on the project under the age of 30. This age bracket often misses out on the opportunity to develop solutions to safety concerns, so participation allows young people to speak out on issues important to them. Developed by the Sir Robert McAlpine Health & Safety Advisor in conjunction with the BIM Manager and young Engineers, the YP SLT invited everyone along to bi-weekly meetings where issues could be raised, discussed and actioned for the benefit of all.

To date, the YP SLT comprises 26 individuals from Sir Robert McAlpine and their subcontractors – including Dornan, EE Smith, Lightweight and Lyons and Annoot.

The group has so far tacked issues including the improvement of site personal hygiene facilities by introducing new options in light of coronavirus, and improving the accessibility to health and safety helplines for all.
