Wheels for Steelwork Fabrication
The structural steelwork trusses for this project were designed to span above the width of the A38 dual carriageway tunnel and to support the 14-storey building above.
There are 16 trusses in total, each with maximum length of 35m, maximum depth of 6m, and weighing up to 119 tonnes. The decision was made to assemble the trusses wholly within the factory of the structural steelwork subcontractor, including fully welded connections and intumescent and decorative painting, the benefits being better quality control, and for quicker and safer installation.
In order to assist the welding and painting of the trusses, the subcontractor manufactured steel wheels, which were capable of supporting and turning the steel trusses during the fabrication process, such that the trusses could be turned around, to save the welders and painters needing to work underneath the fabrication jigs, thereby giving improved working conditions. These therefore ensured consistent quality.
