Reducing Emissions with a Diesel Alternative
This project is reducing their carbon emissions by using an alternative fuel to diesel.
They have started trialling the use of Green Diesel and Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO).
HVO is a fossil free fuel made from 100% renewable raw materials and will be supplied to the project for use in both their generators and other plant machinery.
Throughout the trial they will undertake performance and cost comparisons as part of our ongoing approach to reducing carbon emissions and improving sustainable methods of construction.

– BRE have now been trialling Green D + HVO since January 2021 – just one of the measures implemented to reduce the project’s carbon emissions. With the support of our plant suppliers the fuel was trialled first in an on-site generator and then in a 8T excavator
– Green D + HVO is a direct replacement for diesel with no engine modifications required, compliant with appropriate standards for fuels and approved by a wide range of engine manufacturers such as JCB and Caterpillar
– The fuel shows significant reductions in emissions – for example, every 1000ltrs of diesel produces 2,680kg of CO2e. Green D + HVO creates only 260kg of CO2e
– As of the end of June the project has purchased just over 41,500 litres of the fuel, and after the successful completion of the trial are continuing with and looking to expand its use on the project
