The Hawick Flood Protection Scheme is the largest such scheme in Scotland which when completed is set to protect the town of Hawick from a 1 in 75yr flood event stemming from the River Teviot. The River Teviot and adjoining Slitrig tributary is one of the fastest watercourses in Scotland. More than 970 properties flank the river with many, many children living in a heightened area of risk.
Carrying on the theme of ‘protection’, the contractor created a Site and Water Safety educational engagement plan, which includes roll out of Site and Water Safety Information Books, Activity Books aimed at either Primary School or High School Pupils, an interesting Site and Water Safety presentation and ongoing ‘Site & Water Safety’ update sessions with the Champions and Ambassadors.
When the pupils completed the activity books, these were reviewed and given the high nature of returns, the team worked with the local schools to create Site and Water Safety Champion and Ambassador Awards. These awards will be run annually and tie-in nicely to the school curriculum.
The campaign has been very warmly received by pupils, parents/carers, teachers and the community as a whole.
