The project has implemented a new approach to support reviewing health and safety on site in real-time. Safety through Observation, Discussion and Action (SODA) consists of SODA champions, usually construction or H&S managers, observing behaviours of trade contractor teams and using the prompt questions in the SODA app as a conversation starter to engage with the workforce. These questions are short and easy to remember and are based on the contractors H&S procedure.
The SODA champion will record what they have witnessed which can be either positive feedback or areas for improvement. The actions are recorded in the app and this data is fed into a Power BI system which is reviewed daily and weekly. Early warnings/trends can be identified early instead of waiting for monthly reports.
This programme was developed to improve safety performance on the project by providing real-time data on safety behaviour and risks. It is important to correct any at-risk behaviour so that injuries are prevented. Using SODA creates a culture of good health and safety and supports best practices through praise. Trends can be shared among trade contractors as soon as they emerge instead of waiting till the end of the month. SODA has been embraced on site as the champions have attended workshops to understand how SODA is a vital part of risk management and incident prevention.
