Biodiversity Net Gain on a Rail Project
This contractor and Network Rail have a joint promise to leave a legacy of 10% biodiversity net gain (BNG) for this project. Extensive works have been delivered to replace, enhance and create habitats along the permanent infrastructure and in offsite offset sites.
These habitats now need to be managed for 30 years to reach their target conditions. To support in learning how this must be done in accordance with the management plans, members from the maintenance and ecology teams have been seconded to the contractor over 12 months before handover.
Network Rail’s standards for vegetation management have historically been solely focused on railway safety and have not accounted for biodiversity management considerations. Equally, typical practice is to only become involved in asset management once handed over at project completion.
Early dialogue between the contractor and Network Rail highlighted a need for significant changes to enable them to takeover the management of the Biodiversity Net Gain habitat assets and to care for them in line with the management plans.
