Early engagement with the client identified concerns over the social and environmental impact that building new plant rooms would have on a live campus. As part of the solution the contractor offered to change from a traditional brickwork and cladded building to a pre-build cladded kiosk fully fitted out mechanically and partially electrically.
This kiosk weighing in at circa 10.5 tonnes would be lifted in to position thus removing months of working right outside of student accommodation windows and removing the logistical challenge of getting traditional materials to the building on a daily basis.
This suggestion was embraced by the University Campus and all four kiosks were successfully landed with minimal impact on the campus.
Traditionally individual components would be prefabricated offsite and assembled onsite. Here they went a step further and designed the whole plant room to be prefabricated taking in to account having a weight that could be lifted with a size that was transportable without specialised equipment.
