Testing Based Improvements for Securing Materials at Height

This contractor frequently stores some lightweight materials externally at height. These can be disrupted by high winds and in extreme cases, be blown over site boundaries if not properly restrained.

Traditionally, in common with the rest of the industry, they used ineffective methods as there was no industry guidance on this. They recognised this as unacceptable given the risk posed by these materials and decided to carry out tests at their technology test centre using a wind tunnel.

This enabled them to design a tested solution that they now utilise. As they sit on the health and safety committee for the trade body, NFRC, they have shared these results with them and have now issued this as industry guidance so others can benefit from the testing.

This is improving safety and quality standards in such situations, preventing damage and injury, of which the latter could be fatal. It is reassuring for operatives and supervisors to have guidance on procedures also. Having this documented will spread awareness and raise standards across the industry.
