Location360

Traditionally for rail works within tunnels, the contractor would have deployed site staff to manually count staff in and out of the tunnels which was expensive and generally inaccurate, as the records at either side of the tunnel might be different especially if staff were passing through the tunnel.

They developed a system where data tags are issued to staff when they sign into the site, the staff wear these tags when in the tunnels. There is a digital receiver installed at either end of the tunnel which counts staff in and out of the tunnel with great accuracy, providing a live list of staff within the tunnel, which they can use to account accurately for staff in the event of an emergency or evacuation.

Enhancing safety during a critical 4-week project blockade to renew the drainage within the tunnel, they had approx. 150 staff per shift within the tunnel along with multiple items of on-track plant, Location360 was used to provide near real-time tracking of people and assets within Morley Tunnel.

This deployment monitored workers entering and exiting the tunnel, ensuring zero friction in tracking and safety management of staff. The system proved invaluable during an unplanned evacuation of the tunnel when a small generator went on fire, releasing a lot of smoke and they had to evacuate the tunnel to allow access for the emergency services. Knowing all staff were out of the tunnel was a huge help to the emergency services.
