A site operative collapsed on site and life saving first aid had to be delivered – the operative made a full recovery and received support.
However the site team acknowledged those on site (especially those delivering the first aid) would also be dealing with significant trauma/PTSD and they needed to act fast to provide them with support also.
The following day they arranged a visit with the Listening Centre who provide Trauma Support and Psychological First Aid to those impacted by the incident. This support progressed to one-on-one sessions to try and ensure those effected by the incident would not suffer from trauma/PTSD. This semi-structured approach is designed to help individuals process and reflect on the experience, reducing the risk of post-traumatic stress symptoms.
It is a shift beyond due care, and instead an acknowledgment of the lasting impact such a traumatising event can have on the workforce.
