Considering the neighbours, cyclists – and even the swifts – Robert Woodhead Ltd

Caring about neighbours, the environment, cyclists and even the local swift population has earned contractor Robert Woodhead Ltd high praise from the Considerate Constructors Scheme.

This is an example of what can be achieved on smaller projects and is indicative of Robert Woodhead’s consistent commitment to delivering social, economic and environmental value on construction projects, recognised by its Investors in People Gold award.

Here are some examples of best practice initiatives Robert Woodhead Ltd carried out:

  • Even before building work got underway, the Site Manager had made meaningful links with the neighbours, conducted a traffic analysis survey to protect cyclists, and organised the erection of space-saving stacked cabins for staff and visitors.
  • An eco-friendly car sharing scheme was introduced and atomised mist dust suppression equipment was used.
  • One unique environmental project the site engaged in was working with Derbyshire Wildlife Trust to install swift boxes into the new homes – ensuring nesting sites are available for the declining bird populations.
  • They met the neighbours before they started on site and conducted a traffic management analysis, including a cyclist survey. On average 90 cyclists pass the site throughout the day which was identified as a key safety management area. As a result of this research all deliveries were informed about high cyclist numbers and the site’s supply chain engaged in a cycling awareness campaign as a result. They have introduced robust delivery slots to minimise risks to cyclists, pedestrians and businesses in the local area.
  • Eye-catching safety information was also displayed on the site hoarding thanks to the Derby Homes’ Junior Wardens – a group of young volunteers who do community work for Derby City Council.
  • The site compound area was only 44ft by 22ft which also included double gates for site access. To make the most of the small space they double-stacked 20ft by 8ft cabins – one being a fully furnished canteen and drying room and the other a fully furnished site office with meeting space for client team meetings.
