Access into Lift Shafts

To ensure safe access for the KONE operatives installing the lifts at Limmo and Fisher Street sites, the site and construction team have worked together to develop a simple solution to maintain safe access whilst not restricting the works.

A secured ladder has been installed into the pit base with a security gate fixed at the access/egress point preventing unimpeded access to an open edge. The operative can reach another removable ladder from behind the gate so there is no leading edge, and then attach this to the sill of the door opening, ensuring it is secure. This removable ladder has a chain attached in the event that it is unreachable from behind the gate.

The operative then opens the gate and gets on to the now secured removable ladder whilst maintaining three points of contact. He then closes the doors and the gate before then descending one or two steps and moving across onto the secured ladder to then access the bottom of the lift pit.

For egress, this method is the same but in reverse.
