App for Visually Impaired People

Construction sites should respect every member of the community and ensure measures are in place for disabled members of the public.

See the examples below for how one site addressed this:

  • Supported the development of an app which provides community information on safety barriers for visually impaired people.
  • The Sight Line app provides an audio and large print text description of any nearby roadworks sites that are using the Sight Line system. The description contains the site configuration and length along with how you should negotiate it and how long it will be in place.
  • When users launch the app when they set off and will allow it to run in the background for an hour scanning for nearby sites. When the user comes within a few metres of a site that is using the Sight Line system the app will issue a notification of roadworks ahead. Selecting the notification will trigger the full site description.
  • If the app is not running and you encounter a site and would like to find out about it, you open the app and the description will play within a few seconds.
  • The app also includes additional information such as where there is a ramp.
  • The site has also made sure that their barriers use colours that are more visible to the visually impaired, feature tactile panels to guide users around, and use anti-trip feet to reduce risk of falling.

This system secures the safety of visually impaired people around construction sites.
