Auger Cleaning Attachment

The project team have worked with their piling subcontractor, to develop an auger cleaning attachment that provides an automatic and quieter way to clean the auger of the piling rig during the digging phase of piling.

Traditionally the earth that is dug up using the auger will be shaken or rotated off when it is pulled out of the ground. This is usually noisy, and the vigorous shaking can lead to burst hydraulic hoses. With the new method, once the auger is laden with earth, the attachment acts as an ‘arm’ that pushes the earth off as the auger slowly rotates.

This attachment is a bespoke design for the make and model of the rotary bored piling rig. This activity is extremely noisy with an LAmax of 110db. The auger cleaning attachment avoids the need to rotate or shake the auger when removing the earth that it has dug up, therefore making the process quitter and reduces the risk of spills associated with hydraulic hose bursts.

This method allowed for an LAmax ~16db reduction in noise emissions when compared to shaking of the auger.
