Automating Measurement of Pre Coated Chippings on Hot Rolled Asphalt

The contractor team had noticed an increased demand for hot rolled asphalt with pre coated chippings by clients as a long term surfacing solution for highways.

Whilst undoubtedly a strong product, measuring the spread rate of pre coated chippings, a key element of the hot rolled asphalt process, can be time-consuming, dangerous, inaccurate, inefficient, and costly. Poor measurement can lead to safety and quality issues.

The contractor team worked with their partners to develop a chipper-mounted system that automates measurement of pre coated chippings.

Using a thermal imaging system to differentiate between the hot asphalt and the cold chippings, real time data is generated as a percentage of the total area covered by chippings. This is converted to a kg/m2 measurement and update on site.
