Early Careers Programme

How do you recruit your Early Career talent?

Our target audience are the technology savvy generation. But how can we take advantage of this when it comes to recruitment and specifically those in our Early Careers programme?

Here at BAM, for a long time we’ve used the traditional attraction routes, in particular paid online websites to promote our opportunities and brand. This works well if the right one is chosen to give an effective return on investment, but we wanted to take a different approach and look at what other channels we could use to reach out, engage and raise brand awareness with our target audience.

We decided to focus on social media and in particular Instagram – we wanted to drive down our costs on paid online websites and increase our presence elsewhere. We chose Instagram as it boasts over 1 billion followers with 17.2 million in the UK. Significantly, what is important is the apps ‘skew towards a younger audience: 18-34 year olds account for 61% of the user base, with over 81% of online adults within the age group using the platform’.

Since launching our @BAMConstructEarlyCareers Instagram page we’ve successfully hired three people. We’ve done this by sharing experiences from our BAM Apprentices and showcasing a taste of what it’s like to work at BAM, while importantly, posting and raising awareness of our various opportunities (providing links in our bio through to the relevant application page). To help promote our opportunities, we pay to advertise these posts on Instagram, at approximately a cost of £30 a post, we are then able to specifically target who we are trying to attract, by their geographical locations and the individual interests, so that our advert appears on their newsfeed.

Not only is social media a very useful tool for reaching out to the Early Career audience and raising your brand, it also commercially a great option too.
