A-one+ have identified, developed with a manufacturer, and introduced a new approach to safety barrier post removal on the highway network.
We realised there was a need to change the method of post extraction on safety grounds and challenge the industry standard methods which have been well established for over 30 years.
We examined current methods used across the industry in the UK and internationally, explored alternative equipment, collaborated with manufacturers and contractors and undertook extensive trials and research.
We trialled an excavator mounted prototype post puller, termed Barrier Master, and quickly realised its potential, working with the designer and manufacturer to further trial and develop the equipment including on-road trials on the M62.
We recently invested in the equipment purchasing one for our Area 12 project.
Various size models suitable for attaching to excavator or lorry mounted crane are now available to the wider industry.
Barrier Master delivers clear benefits against the Considerate Constructors Scheme Code of Considerate Practice including:
- Safety issues associated with traditional methods of post removal eliminated;
- Annual cost of congestion on Highways England network is £3billion, 25% of which is caused by incidents and emergency repairs. Barrier Master is quicker and more efficient so unplanned lane closure duration is reduced by an estimated 450hrs per year across our contracts;
- Lower accidental damage repair and construction costs;
- Safer strategic road network through increased outputs and fewer outstanding barrier repairs.
