During construction of the A465 Section 2 permanent lighting columns had to be removed for work to proceed.

This raised concerns that Lesser Horseshoe bats would then fly directly across the carriageway, resulting in a number of fatalities as they are used to the lights being in position.

To prevent this a series of temporary lighting columns which are very mobile were installed that are designed to a specific lux level to deter bats from crossing the road whilst ensuring road users are not affected by glare.

Data was found that activity was reduced at 3.6 lux but not all bats stopped flying along the hedge at that level and 3.6 lux is considered to be a ‘very low light level’.

Therefore during our trial with the information gathered, along with the advice from an independent bat ecologist, bat mitigation lighting was implemented to a 5.0 lux level to ensure the lighting was sufficient enough for the bats to recognise and stick to the flight path avoiding potential fatality concerns.
