New recruits to small construction companies often have limited formal training and little experience working with principal contractors. Considerate companies will be aware of this and put measures in place to support and educate new employees.
See the examples below for how one company achieved this:
- The company recognised that some new recruits had little formal training in the industry and created a library of job-specific risks from the HSE, which were converted into learning packs on manual handling and other topics.
- Operatives are each given the packs and assisted to upload an electronic test onto their phone or computer.
- The on-line test is then carried out and the operative assisted and retested where necessary.
- This is an excellent way for a small organisation to help new and vulnerable employees who would not otherwise be receiving any formal training.
This innovation was achieved by a registered company with an annual turnover below £3.5m.
