Big Build – Rain Gardens

The team at Multiplex’s University of Glasgow project took part in the 2019 Honor Goodsite Big Build Competition. Partnering with a local primary school, we decided to build a replica of the University’s new Research Hub which is currently under construction. As well as the Research Hub, the team also built a replica of the Rain Gardens which will form an integral part of the supporting infrastructure on the redeveloped University campus.

The Rain Gardens are a Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SuDS) which will process a large proportion of the sites run-off, whilst also providing valuable amenity space on the campus and contributing towards the University’s aspirations to increase the sites biodiversity.

Building the model involved gathering soil, gravel and plants and strategically placing them throughout the cardboard and plastic structure in order to control a flow of water. This demonstration enabled the students to think about how water flows through different materials, and raised awareness of strategies to mitigate the effects of increased rainfall events brought about by a changing climate.
