Supporting Macmillan Cancer Support

At the time Macmillan Cancer Support campaign had been targeting male cancer. It is estimated that men are 70% more likely to die from cancer but only 20% of callers to the Macmillan Support line were men. There may have been a variety of reasons for this, but it was decided that awareness should be raised about the issue.

In the construction industry, roughly 80% of the workforce is male, so it was the perfect target for a program such as Macmillan Cancer Support to raise awareness for if it were to target men specifically. This was a huge opportunity for Macmillan to get its target audience.

An element of the campaign was to target Tuesday 10th May 2016 as a fund raising day. A team from the Bond Street Station Upgrade Project organised a collection on Bond Street Underground Station. Once again, the BSSU One Team spirit shone through and an energetic group of individuals from Costain, Laing O’Rourke and London Underground employees volunteered to spend an hour with a bucket to raise money.

A total of £1196 was collected during the day. It is not that hard to find the time for when you can do something good, and this was a perfect opportunity to do just that.

The money raised will allow Macmillan Cancer Support to continue their work and to be there for people living with cancer and their families, giving them all sorts of support when they need it most. This could be anything from a chat with someone who understands to providing expert information that they can trust.

It is important to know that you do not need to have cancer yourself in order to get support, you can phone or contact them on behalf of a family member or friend as well.
