Campaigns and inspections to reinforce safety

Site managers and company directors should set the standard for attitudes towards safety on site.

All members of the workforce and contractors, should be involved and understand the main safety initiatives, which should be made clear at induction, during meetings and through signage around site.

Campaigns and inspections will ensure that safety remains in the forefront of workers minds and also helps to encourage a culture of continuous, positive safety performance and improvement.

Many sites have instilled excellent examples of safety measures, such as:

  • A robust safety management system was in place, with safety officer visits and a full audit procedure planned and completed;
  • Company safety initiatives were fully explained by poster and at induction;
  • Method statements/risk assessments were reviewed every quarter with an extensive feedback procedure;
  • Directors carried out crossover weekly inspections, with an internal safety incentive scheme, supported by a Health and Safety league table;
  • A supervisors’ workshops/seminar encouraged SMSTS accreditation.
