The contractor are working with CARES and the steel rebar supply chain to implement a digital chain of custody for rebar.

Until now demonstrating the provenance of material on site has relied on collecting delivery notes to cross check against computer databases to confirm compliance with quality and sustainability standards. Whilst CARES certified rebar has a pattern of rolling marks to identify the mill, this nevertheless requires some manual checks to provide confirmation.

The CARES cloud includes a QR coding system that allows the rebar to be scanned on site using the CARES app to instantly identify the source of the product and its certification details.

The scheme is being developed further to facilitate links to BIM such that actual strength and carbon data from the steel mills rather than generic data can be used in design and confirmed through the use of the QR codes when the material arrives on site.

This should enable optimisation of rebar to avoid overspecification and excessive use of materials and improve the accuracy of carbon footprint calculations.
