Cassette Scaffolding at Huddersfield Station

The West Alliance, working closely with its supply partners, developed an innovative solution to keep Huddersfield station and its platforms fully operational during the historic ‘Euston Roof’ refurbishment. To achieve this, temporary horizontal cassette platforms, which are modular sections designed to enhance accessibility and operational flexibility during construction were prefabricated and rolled into place across the full width of the two live railway lines.

Supported by vertical scaffolding structures installed on platforms 1 and 2, these cassette platforms provided a protective barrier between passengers, trains, and the overhead works, enabling the station to remain safely open throughout the project.

Delivering the necessary works to the station causes a huge amount of disruption to passengers and the local community. Huddersfield station has 3 million journeys a year, minimising the impact was paramount when devising the temporary scaffolding arrangements to gain continual access to the ‘Euston roof’.

They have taken into account the spatial constraints of the station and tailored a one-of-a-kind innovative methodology to ensure a streamlined, efficient installation process. The system allows continual access to the roof whilst maintaining the operational railway.

The prefabrication of the cassettes and rolling them into place minimised the installation time and therefore the station closure, reducing the impact on the station and passengers.
