Construction Academy for Prison Residents
A Construction Academy has been set up within a prison whereby the contractor in partnership with the local College to teach, monitor and assess upon completion various trades, building a small house with 6 custodial residents over a 12 week period. The aim of this initiative is to:
- Roll out a continued program 3-4 times a year
- Provide people in custody, training and work experience in construction from skilled tutors/experts
- Support people in custody to achieve skills to enhance employment opportunities upon liberty
- Increase self confidence, focus, self achievement and well-being for the residents by offering real life working job whilst in custody.
They have formulated a sustainable program that can be maintained regionally on various projects across Tayside to support hard to reach groups within the community. This is investing into the construction sector by actively attempting to reduce the skills gap and increase the workforce with credits and qualifications that residents of the prison can build on and pursue a career in construction.
