Construction Awareness Week

Both children and parents of Newall Green Primary School had the opportunity to partake in Construction Awareness Week. Children from Year 1 through to Year 6 took part in fun construction related activities to help inspire them to consider construction as a future career. At the same time parents were taking part in our ‘into work training’.

We delivered two assemblies to a total of 518 pupils, tailoring each one to their learning levels. The assemblies focused on site safety and getting children to name things to do with construction from A to Z.

Classes then participated in several activities from SNAP circuits, building a Lego tower and building a Tetrahedron. All activities revolved around Science, Technology, English or Maths (STEM), and these subjects were used practically throughout the course of the week.

Whilst this was taking place, ENGIE were also delivering our ‘Into Work’ training package to some of the children’s parents and local residents in the school. This included Health and Safety in Construction accreditation, manual handling and working at height and CSCS preparation. We were very pleased to provide all adults on this course with a FREE CSCS test.

After the week was finished, we gave the opportunity for adults on this course to partake in work experience on our Amberley Drive site. Here’s what one of them had to say:

“I have learnt so much on the course and during work experience: I really pushed myself. Really interesting .” – Jenny

”Construction Awareness Week was a fantastic opportunity for our pupils to broaden their horizons and  learn some hands-on workplace skills. They loved it!” – Ruth Perry, Headteacher of Newall Green.
