At our Interserve site in Derby, the Derby and Derbyshire Waste Treatment Centre, we implemented a simple system for controlling cranes and concrete pumps on site.
When a crane landed on our site it was given a red card (a laminated piece of paper coloured red) to display in its windscreen. This allowed it to drive (provided driver/ operator was inducted) to the workface and rig the outriggers on the correct outrigger mats as well as rigging the crane.
The crane then had to wait until a lift supervisor/ appointed person had inspected the set up.
Once satisfied with rigging, briefing records, lift team qualifications, and lift plans, and inspection certificates were checked for crane and lift equipment, the AP/ Lift supervisor issued a green card that was then placed into the window and replaced the red card.
This allowed the crane to then start operations; a simple way of controlling operations on site without costing the earth.
