Creating Bat Crossings to Replace the Removal of Hedgerows

Disruptions caused by construction work should be minimised as much as possible.

Before work commences, the impact on community and environment should be identified and measures implemented to reduce disturbances.

Simple and cost effective solutions should be sought to mitigate the loss of natural habitats.

Below is an example of how a site considered the local bat population:

Temporary ‘Bat Crossings’ were erected following the removal of mature hedgerows to make way for the new road;
These bat crossings were implemented to minimise the disturbance of wildlife and allow them to adjust to the new landscape;
These wire meshes help bats to navigate over the road safely;
They were created using fencing panels with hedge trimmings attached to them and placed along the line of the former hedgerows.
