Creating Opportunities to Encourage New Talent into the Industry

It is important to be actively encouraging new people into the industry.

In recent years a skills shortage has become apparent and it is vital that this issue is addressed, to ensure the successful future of the construction industry.

Sites should be making a conscious effort to engage with the local community, to demonstrate the various job prospects available for the younger generations to consider as a potential career path.

Below is an example of how sites have created  new opportunities for members of the local community:

  • A local social enterprise was established, creating more jobs with the aim of drawing additional people into the construction industry. 12 local long-term unemployed people were employed to manufacture prefabricated timber frame panels off-site. Using this process, the site was able to construct two homes in one day. This initiative was extended further to tenants, providing an opportunity to train tenants on site.
  • An on-site skills centre was provided and certain members of staff acted as career mentors in conjunction with the local college;
  • Selected pupils from the local school were invited to decorate part of the building as an introduction to the trade and a possible apprenticeship opportunity.
