The site team needed to construct a large basement on a confined site with difficult ground conditions that comprised a high water table and heavy clay.
This required a barrier to be created through a temporary sheet piled cofferdam perimeter. A common problem caused by this is that the soil is retained in the sheet pile which creates the risk of falling material.
Traditionally, this is removed by hand which, as well as being time inefficient, brings further health and safety risks.
To overcome this, the team designed a bespoke blade to the profile of the sheet pile which is secured to an excavator quick hitch attachment.
By developing the blade to remove soil, this enabled the safe removal of material by loading it directly into a dumper, avoiding risks and inefficiencies of manual handling and is also a cost effective solution.
