Design Engineer Construct! partnership agreement with Harris Academy

Balfour Beatty are providing funding and support to Harris Academy in Dundee to enable delivery of the Class of Your Own Design Engineer Construct! (DEC!) programme.

Design Engineer Construct!® (DEC!) is an accredited learning programme that has been created by Class of your Own for secondary-school age students and has been expertly developed to create and inspire the next generation of Built Environment professionals. Through a project-based approach, DEC! applies pure academic subjects to the latest construction industry practices. The result is young people with real-world practical experience and employability skills

Harris Academy Technical department are currently delivering the Level 1 DEC! Curriculum to 60 x S3 pupils. Pupils participate in sessions during three classes a week for the duration of their third year and are currently learning how to use Autodesk Revit software to create 3D design models.

The 2017/18 DEC! Level 1 programme has been running since August 2017 as part of a two year partnership agreement. Since starting, pupils have completed a range of modules which has broadened their understanding of Sustainability, Community, Project Team, Architecture and Design and BIM. The pupils have also completed an ECO day challenge which was delivered over a full day supported by teaching staff, Class of Your Own reps and Balfour Beatty staff.

In addition, Balfour Beatty professionals have provided inputs into class sessions including;

  • John Cairns – Community Benefits Advisor
  • Matthew Sharpe & Jake Crichton – Site Engineers
  • Poul Wend Hansen – Head of Environment
  • Ian Hogg – Design Director
  • Alan Duffy – BIM Manager
