Deterring Pigeons with Sriracha

Feral pigeons can nest all the year round and it can be a struggle, particularly on city centre sites, to prevent them from roosting and building nests in partly constructed buildings.

A nesting pigeon can delay work and pigeons can represent a health hazard, with diseases associated with pigeons include psittacosis which is a respiratory disease that humans can catch through exposure to the birds or their droppings.

Pigeons on this project are deterred by regularly spraying potential roosting/nesting sites with a diluted solution of Sriracha – a sauce made from chillies.

This solution is recognised as a humane deterrent, the spicy solution, made from natural ingredients, irritates their beaks and feet, discouraging them from taking up residence.
