The Area East team have implemented an initiative to align with producing a low carbon product, the electric piling rig. This uses less energy compared to the traditional model rig, however, is just as powerful.
The rig is the only one of its kind in the UK and the only rig in the world to be connected to mains electricity. Improving air quality and being a significant greenhouse gas saving, proving the success of the carbon reduction movement in Area East, the electric piling rig was backed by funding from the government’s Red Diesel Replacement programme. It provides proof of concept for converting on-site diesel equipment, delivering the physical conversion of the rig, and exploring the viability of hydrogen fuel or drawing from a renewable national grid network, for the decarbonisation of the construction site.
The rig saves 70 tonnes of CO2 versus the traditional diesel comparative by being plugged into mains electricity on a renewable energy tariff. In terms of air quality is completely emission-free on site, with improvement in rig air quality.
