Employment opportunities for disadvantaged people

Where possible, opportunities should be created for local businesses, as well as unemployed or disadvantaged people who could be offered work experience, training or apprenticeships.

Working with and supporting the needs of the local community, is fundamental to the industry’s image and could help future recruitment.

Employing local people not only benefits the community, but also contributes to a diverse skill set amongst the workforce.

Examples of how a number of sites have created employment opportunities include:

  • The opportunity was taken to ‘reach out’ to the community, by employing ex-offenders (as this particular site’s project was to build a new headquarters for a police force);
  • Employed an organisation providing opportunities for disadvantaged people, to supply site signage. This resulted in a letter of thanks from the Probation Trust, together with a structured training programme for apprentices;
  • Young offenders were offered placements that started at one day a week. This increased to eight weeks full-time and resulted in the offer of a full-time job with the groundwork subcontractor on site.
