Encouraging young people to start a construction career (South Australia)

Sites should create a positive impression and proactively encourage young people to consider a career within the construction industry.

Since 2002 the Doorways2Construction program in South Australia has given high school vocational education and training students the opportunity to completely renovate two Housing SA properties every year.

Since the project started 24 houses have been completely renovated up to modern standards, including the installation of new bathrooms and kitchens, replacing old windows and driveways and much more.

This gives the tenants a more modern home to live in and also gives the students the opportunity to gain hands on experience they couldn’t get in a classroom environment.

In 2015, 55 high school students participated in the project with many of those being female.

Of the 55 involved in the project, 30 are continuing on a construction career path through employment or additional training.
