Engineering Challenge

CR Civil Engineering set an ‘Engineering Challenge’ to the Year 8 Maths Department at East Leake Academy.

The challenge was based on our scheme at Market Harborough – building a brand new 300 space car park and access road.

The students had to work out the number of loads of muck, aggregates and asphalt needed to build the car park.

They were given information such as the depth of each layer of material, the area of the car park, the weight of each material and how much material/ waste each type of truck can carry.

The students were shown before and after videos of Market Harborough, some videos showing the trucks delivering materials, which was the work the students had to complete. It was very positive for them see that something they completed in a classroom  was then applied to a real life scenario.

Our Quantity Surveyor for the scheme and our Training Coordinator both set the challenge to the school and the winners were chosen by them as well as our Managing Director. There were three teams crowned winners and they all have the opportunity to visit our Ripley Yard site in September.

After the winners were announced, the students had the opportunity to ask questions and we were impressed by how eager they were to understand more about the construction industry, especially being such a young age.
