A-one+ keep the safety of our workers at the heart of everything we do. That’s why we took the opportunity to learn from some accidents to challenge the industry norm head protection.
Within the highways community head protection is often worn as a mandatory part of PPE. Current helmets conform with BS EN397:2012 and offer protection from impacts and penetration from objects falling from above, more suited to construction sites typical of the 1970s.
We identified the need to have a new form of head protection to protect from flying objects at the back and sides of the head, helmet retention during falls and/ or contact with fixed objects including the ground. When considering the risks, it was identified that it would be more appropriate for the new head protection to adhere to a different standard: EN 14052: 2012 –High Performance Industrial Helmets.
The EN14052 standard sets the bar higher for head gear, requiring helmets to withstand forces over three times the crown impact level of those that pass EN397 and, for the first time, to provide protection all over the helmet shell. Several helmets were trialled and A-one+ decided to invest in the Future Safety Manta SAR Helmet.
The Manta SAR is a multi-functional helmet with built-in light eye protection for the most demanding work environments, with the facility to fit a variety of existing accessories including ear protection, headsets and face shields. The helmet has a high level of impact protection from impact/shock both from above and from the sides.
All our workers are now being issued with these new helmets.
