Enhancing a bee friendly environment

Apis were appointed by Berkeley Homes to complete a feasibility study to see if it was possible to install bee hives at Saffron Square.

This was carried out with the aim of providing a habitat for bees who are in decline across the UK.

The feasibility study determined the site was not suitable due to the lack of forage or ‘bee food’ available in the local area.

To try and address this problem, Berkeley Homes sponsored a planting guide produced by Bermondsey Street Bees to raise awareness of plant species which are ‘pollinator-centric’.

Its hoped that the guide will raise awareness and encourage people to plant bee friendly species in their gardens or even window boxes.

This has worked as we now have a hive installed which seems to be thriving and providing honey to go to the residents of the occupied areas.
