Environmental Top Trumps

The sustainability team at Multiplex’s University of Glasgow project have developed a fun break out session as part of one of their in-house training courses. The Environmental Responsibilities Training course has been designed to provide all members of the site team with a broad overview of the legislative, strategic and client-driven environmental requirements of the project. In order to provide some variety to the course, the sustainability team developed a ‘Top Trump’ style activity.

The session involves everyone (either individually or in pairs) coming up with an environmental initiative each for the project. The initiatives are then self-assessed against the three criteria of environmental benefit, whole-life cost and technical complexity with each section being marked on a scale of one (poor performing) to five (best performing). The initiatives are then reviewed against Multiplex’s Net Positive Sustainability Strategy, to see which of the five pillars the idea aligns with as a measure of its capacity to deliver our business strategy. The initiative with the highest score is ultimately awarded the ‘Top Trump’ status.

The broad range of initiatives that have been put forward by the team are on display in the project office and visitors are encouraged to add to them. This has been a great way of getting our staff thinking about environmental improvements, whilst also providing an insight to how to develop a business case for their implementation.
