Equipping Gatemen with Breathalysers
Contractors must be vigilant against the presence of drugs and alcohol on site, as it is in the interests of everyone on site to remain safe. This can be a particular problem with drivers, as a driver under the influence poses a grave risk to the local community.
See the examples below for how one site addressed this:
- As the gateman has the most contact with deliveries and drivers, the site equipped each gateman with breathalyser tubes.
- If the gateman suspects that a driver is incapable to drive, they are requested to take a breathalyser test before going back on the road.
- The gateman is also equipped with a tyre pressure gauge to check tyre pressures when requested, making sure the vehicles are fit for use.
- He has been further trained to routinely inspect vehicles for irregularities such as the load not being secure.
This simple system ensures that dangerous drivers or vehicles are not allowed on or off site, thus minimising the risk to the local community.
