Extending Safety Requirements for HGVs

Site managers are responsible for the traffic generated by their sites.

It is vital that the risks posed to the public generated from site traffic are effectively assessed and measures are implemented to mitigate such hazards.

A number of sites have implemented lorry safety requirements devised by Crossrail, including all HGVs fitted with blind spot proximity detectors, side under rails and warning alert systems to detect cyclists.

Other sites have extended these safety requirements for HGVs:

  • All company vehicles were fitted with safety equipment and detection devices;
  • Drivers were given safety specific training sessions and refresher training;
  • The same safety measures were fully funded and rolled out to several key suppliers and the plant hire supplier.
