Cigarette butts are one of the most commonly discarded pieces of waste worldwide with 4 trillion butts ending up as waste annually. Usually all of this waste ends up in landfill with some also finding its way into our waterways/reservoirs and eventually into the ocean where each one can release enough nicotine & microplastic to pollute up to 1000L of water.

Filtra Cycle is a new start-up company in Ireland and have developed a method for extracting the plastic fibres from cigarette butts and producing recycled plastic pellets, suitable for injection moulding that will be used for commercial products such as sunglasses.

A filtra bin, which is made from upcycled end of life beer kegs, was provided and has been installed in the smoking area to collect the butts. Once the bin is full, all waste is collected by the company and sent to their facility to begin the process of extracting the plastic.
