Funnel Bins at Service Areas

Overview of the trial

Highways England gave Area 3 the opportunity to trial the Tuben funnel bins. The trial was undertaken at Winchester Services and consisted of the installation of three funnel bins, two at standard car height and one at truck height. Each of the bins had a large sticker on them which demonstrated how to use the bin and reinforced that it was to be used for litter.

Feedback

The trial was deemed successful in encouraging motorists to dispose of litter before re-joining the motorway, and was perceived to help raise awareness of litter as an issue and make people think about their littering behaviour. Whilst the results are from a small-scale trial, they do indicate a positive impact on litter levels in the target area and give testimony to support the placement of these bins at other service areas on the strategic road network.
